His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, received His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, at Al-Azhar headquarters.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar welcomed Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam to his home—Al-Azhar—remarking that he is a son of Al-Azhar who served the institution during a highly critical period with sincerity and dedication to his faith, country, and the institution itself. He emphasized that Al-Azhar receives him today with love and appreciation, reaffirming that his devoted efforts in serving Al-Azhar and promoting human fraternity at regional and global levels have never ceased since his tenure as an advisor to Al-Azhar, continuing through various prestigious roles and impactful global initiatives.

At the outset of the meeting, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam expressed his profound appreciation—and that of the Muslim Council of Elders—for the efforts of His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. He commended President El-Sisi’s unwavering stance in supporting the causes of the Muslim Ummah, particularly his honorable position on the Palestinian cause and his firm rejection of the forced displacement of the people of Gaza from their homes and homeland. He affirmed that this dignified Egyptian position is a source of pride, emphasizing that Egypt, our beloved homeland, always requires the unity and solidarity of its people to ensure its prosperity, progress, security, and stability.

Judge Abdelsalam expressed his deep honor and pleasure in visiting Al-Azhar headquarters, reminiscing about the ten years he spent as an advisor to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. He stated: “I had the privilege of accompanying my esteemed teacher and Sheikh, His Eminence the Grand Imam, for over ten years during my tenure as his advisor. I learned immensely from his wisdom, and I have never encountered anyone more devoted than the Grand Imam in serving Islam, the nation, and humanity, nor anyone more committed to peace and upholding the truth. His dedication to this prestigious institution—entrusted by the Almighty Allah to preserve Islamic law and the Arabic language—is unparalleled. History bears witness to Grand Imam Al-Tayeb’s remarkable contributions as a globally recognized Muslim figure, championing the causes of Islam and Muslims, serving our beloved homeland, Egypt, and his tireless efforts in spreading the values of peace, fraternity, and coexistence. Under his leadership, Al-Azhar has witnessed an unprecedented transformation, achieving global prominence in disseminating the true, moderate message of Islam. His stance on various issues has garnered worldwide attention and admiration.”

The Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders further highlighted that the Grand Imam’s announcement of Egypt’s hosting of the second edition of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, scheduled to be held at Al-Azhar next year, stems from Egypt’s leading role, its global stature, and its historical efforts in uniting the Muslim Ummah. He also noted that the Grand Imam has directed the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Association to commence preparations for this significant conference, particularly following the great success of the first edition, which was held earlier this month in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, welcomed Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim, Head of the Iraqi National Wisdom Movement, to discuss strategies for bolstering Islamic unity among all components of the Muslim Ummah. 

His Eminence stressed that unity is the sole pathway to revitalizing our Arab and Muslim nations. Consequently, the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference was launched in the Kingdom of Bahrain to harmonize the perspectives of Muslim scholars. He noted that the Ummah is currently grappling with a difficult situation that presents a substantial challenge, particularly emphasizing the profound distress experienced by Arabs and Muslims due to the extended conflict in Gaza, which has now persisted for over sixteen months. The Grand Imam further declared that the only resolution lies in uniting Muslims under a common cause, emphasizing that the time for division and discord has passed. He expressed profound surprise at the paradox of division without cause, saying, “It is profoundly astonishing that we find reasons to divide when there are none, while others find unity despite having no common ground. We must fiercely protect our unity, for the Muslim Ummah possesses shared values that can serve as a solid foundation for unifying our voices and standing as one.” His Eminence prayed for God to bless Muslim countries with peace and security.

During his reception of Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim, Head of the Iraqi National Wisdom Movement, His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, highlighted the robust connections between Al-Azhar, the Council, and Iraq. He observed that such visits yield significant benefits and mirror the activities undertaken during conferences like the recent “Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference,” which emphasized discussions and calls for unity. He reiterated that these efforts aim to positively influence the lives of Muslims and deepen the bonds of Islamic fraternity.

Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim expressed his gratitude and respect for the roles played by Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders, particularly regarding the Palestinian issue, commenting, “We consistently follow your esteemed statements and regard Al-Azhar as a beacon of moderation and balance, renowned for its advocacy on behalf of Muslim issues; this has always been our understanding of it. The Iraqi government and its religious leadership have maintained a unified stance on the Palestinian ordeal from its outset seventy years ago to the present. We value Egypt’s firm opposition to the displacement of Palestinians, which has been clear and valiant, as well as the profound Arab and Islamic solidarity.”

Mr. Al-Hakim also briefed the Grand Imam on the latest developments in Iraq, stating that the country is making rapid and steady strides toward stability and advancement. He proclaimed, “Thank God, we are experiencing ongoing recovery and stability across all fronts, notably in the political and security realms. Iraq has become a bustling workshop of reconstruction and development, and we are racing against time to ensure Iraq reaches its deserved prominence and respect. The diverse Iraqi populace eagerly anticipates your visit, valuing your significant Islamic stature. They deeply respect and follow your bold stances.”

During the holy month of Ramadan, the social media accounts of the Muslim Council of Elders will showcase five Ramadan-themed programs: “Al-Imam Al-Tayeb,” “One Ummah,” “Human Values with the Elders,” “Month of Harmonious Coexistence,” and “Our Ethics.” These programs are integral to the Muslim Council of Elders’ media strategy, aimed at leveraging every available platform to foster dialogue, peace, tolerance, and coexistence.

The program “Al-Imam Al-Tayeb” hosts His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders. In this series, His Eminence delves into the Most Beautiful Names of Allah, exploring their meanings, the significance of understanding them, and their impact on a believer’s behavior and interactions with others.

Building on the significance of dialogue for unity among all components of the Muslim Ummah and following the outcomes of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference hosted in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the program “One Ummah” has been launched by the Muslim Council of Elders. The conference, attended by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, saw participation from over 400 scholars and thinkers from various Islamic schools of thought. It resulted in the release of ‘The Call of the People of Qiblah’ charter. The program “One Ummah” emphasizes the importance of dialogue, coexistence strategies among all components of the Ummah, the role of academic institutions and youth in advancing Islamic dialogue, and the challenges that such dialogue faces.

The program “Human Values with the Elders,” now in its third consecutive year, continues to explore the noble human values outlined in the Document on Human Fraternity. These include cooperation, human solidarity, dignity, peace, coexistence, justice, and equality. The program highlights their vital role in enhancing human life, fostering peace and harmony, and building cohesive and interconnected societies.

The program “Month of Harmonious Coexistence” delves into a variety of human values that are especially pertinent during the holy month of Ramadan. It features episodes that focus on the values of coexistence and tolerance, covering topics such as the jurisprudence of differing opinions, the etiquette of dialogue, managing differences, viewing differences as divine mercy, and utilizing diversity and differences to benefit the community and build nations, among other foundational human values that promote coexistence.

For the first time, in recognition of the critical role of ethics and education in shaping effective Islamic communities, the Muslim Council of Elders has launched the program “Our Ethics.” Inspired by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who said, “I was sent to perfect good character,” this program is dedicated to instilling essential ethical values in the youth and future generations. Featured values include speaking kindly to people, assisting those in distress, encouraging good deeds, being a good neighbor, and other moral principles.

The Muslim Council of Elders’ Central Asia branch in collaboration with L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University and the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will host a regional workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: A Sustainable Future” on February 26, 2025, in Astana. This pioneering event brings together policymakers, academics, and industry leaders from across Central Asia to explore the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence and its role in sustainable development.

The workshop will feature prominent voices such as L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University Rector Sydykov Yerlan Battashevich, Senate Deputy Chairman Zhakip Kazhmanovich Asanov, and Muslim Council of Elders – Central Asia Director Mohamed Elamin Atta Amin Mohamed. It will unite experts from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia to discuss artificial intelligence governance, human rights, and innovative applications in education, healthcare, and regional cooperation. The event will also feature the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University and the Muslim Council of Elders’ Central Asia branch, solidifying their commitment to ongoing collaboration on artificial intelligence ethics and innovation.

The workshop aims to tackle critical ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence, including data privacy, accountability, and bias mitigation, while promoting governance models that ensure fairness and inclusivity. Topics will span biometric data protection, synthetic medical data generation, and the digital potential of the Kazakh language, reflecting the region’s technological and cultural priorities. This initiative aligns with the Muslim Council of Elders’ mission to foster dialogue and ethical progress, extending its influence from interfaith harmony to the responsible advancement of technology.

“Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: A Sustainable Future” will conclude with a workshop declaration, affirming a shared commitment to responsible artificial intelligence development. By fostering collaboration among academia, government, and industry, the event promises to deliver actionable policy recommendations for Kazakhstan and Central Asia, reinforcing the role of ethical innovation in building a more inclusive future.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and interfaith dialogue in Southeast Asia, the Muslim Council of Elders is organizing ‘Harmony Camp 2025’ in Bandung, Indonesia, from February 24 to 27, 2025. The camp is being held in collaboration with several organizations dedicated to interfaith dialogue and environmental issues, including Eco Learning Camp-Bandung, the Center for Islamic Studies at the National University of Indonesia, the Gusdurian Network, and Greenfaith Indonesia.

The event is being coordinated by the Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the Muslim Council of Elders, headquartered in Jakarta. It will bring together forty young men and women from six different religious backgrounds, selected from among dozens of applicants for this unique initiative. The camp aims to foster mutual understanding among followers of different faiths, provide a platform for dialogue and communication among young people, and raise environmental awareness by highlighting the role of religious values in climate protection.

This initiative is part of the Muslim Council of Elders’ broader mission to advance peaceful coexistence in Southeast Asia. The Council is dedicated to promoting dialogue, tolerance, and human fraternity among people of different cultures and religions while encouraging youth participation in initiatives that contribute to building more peaceful and inclusive societies.

Harmony Camp 2025 also builds on the Council’s longstanding commitment to youth engagement. Previous initiatives include the Emerging Peacemakers Forum, which held its first edition in London in 2018 and its second in Geneva in 2022, providing a platform for interfaith and intercultural dialogue among young leaders. Additionally, the Council co-organized the Azadi Youth Fellowship in Pakistan, which trains young people to be ambassadors for peace and coexistence, as well as the Student Fellowship Dialogues for Human Fraternity in partnership with Georgetown University.

In line with its religious commitment to environmental and climate issues, the Muslim Council of Elders has played a leading role in this field. It organized the Religions for Climate Summit in Abu Dhabi in November 2023, which culminated in the launch of the ‘Call of Conscience: Abu Dhabi Joint Statement of Religious Leaders for Climate’. The Council also spearheaded the first-ever ‘Faith Pavilion’ at COP28 and at COP29 in Baku, further advancing the engagement of religious leaders in addressing global environmental challenges.

The Muslim Council of Elders held its eighteenth session in Manama, Bahrain, under the chairmanship of His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders. This pioneering event was attended by council members and a distinguished assembly of scholars and religious figures from various Islamic schools of thought worldwide. The special meeting was convened to address issues of intra-Islamic dialogue amidst the current challenges facing the Ummah, with a particular focus on the Palestinian cause.

Participants unanimously rejected all displacement efforts aimed at obliterating the Palestinian issue and reiterated their support for the Arab and Islamic stance against such measures. They invoked blessings for the success of Arab leaders in the forthcoming Arab Summit in Egypt, hoping for unity in promoting the welfare of the Muslim Ummah.

The attendees praised the Palestinian people’s heroic resilience in maintaining their land and heritage in the face of severe aggression, which disregards the intrinsic value of land and national loyalty. They highlighted that unity and focusing on shared values are essential for harnessing the Ummah’s capabilities to tackle these challenges effectively.

Furthermore, the participants fully endorsed and supported the outcomes of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, including “The Call of the People of Qiblah” charter issued at this pivotal conference. This document provides the Muslim world with a detailed vision for the future of Islamic dialogue, outlining its priorities and pressing issues. It aims to foster Islamic fraternity across all community segments, fostering an environment of mutual understanding and respect, and halting all forms of derogatory speech, hate rhetoric, and takfir (accusations of disbelief).

In response to this call, the participating scholars decided to continue collective efforts in the field of Islamic dialogue. This includes implementing these visions through practical initiatives, notably forming a league for Islamic dialogue that includes representatives from all Islamic schools of thought. This league aims to follow up on the conference recommendations in consultation and coordination with partners from all Islamic schools of thought worldwide, affirming their full support for the upcoming Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference to be held at Al-Azhar in the Arab Republic of Egypt next year.

The participants also discussed the pros and cons of artificial intelligence on the value and ethical system, emphasizing the necessity of an accompanying ethical charter to govern those managing these technological tools and guide users in optimally benefiting from them positively. They stressed the importance of Islamic institutions taking the initiative and scholars uniting efforts to leverage artificial intelligence tools, utilizing them to effectively communicate with the younger generations and youth, especially concerning accessing correct religious information and sound religious rulings.

The inaugural Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference wrapped up in the Kingdom of Bahrain, running under the theme “One Ummah, One Shared Destiny” on February 19 and 20, 2025. Held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, the event was graced by the presence of His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders. Over 400 scholars and Islamic figures from diverse intellectual traditions participated worldwide.

The conference’s Final Statement stressed that the unity of the Muslim Ummah is both a covenant and a commitment, asserting that fostering Islamic fraternity is everyone’s responsibility. It highlighted that today’s necessary dialogue is not about theological disputes or reconciling schools of thought but a constructive and understanding exchange that strengthens the commonalities among Muslims to address global challenges, maintaining the principles of dialogue etiquette and ethics.

The Statement called for increased collaboration among religious, intellectual, and media leaders to dismantle the culture of hatred and animosity among Muslims. It emphasized the importance of self-criticism in reassessing intellectual and cultural endeavors and making needed corrections, continuing the legacy of past imams and ulema (scholars). It also underscored the importance of criminalizing insults and curses among Islamic sects, clarifying that Islam forbids causing harm even to those who worship deities other than Allah. Therefore, it is imperative to avoid harming fellow worshippers of Allah, even in the presence of differing jurisprudential views.

 The final statement called for uniting Islamic efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause, resisting occupation, and combating poverty and extremism. It highlighted that such cooperation on major issues would resolve minor differences under the umbrella of the Islamic fraternity. Additionally, it recommended completing a comprehensive academic project to document the areas of agreement among Muslims concerning creed, Sharia, and values. This project aims to be a reference that enhances shared Islamic consciousness and corrects misconceptions within the Ummah.

The statement emphasized the pivotal role of women in strengthening Islamic unity, both through their familial roles and their involvement in academic and societal spheres. It advocated for incorporating a culture of understanding into educational programs, religious sermons, media platforms, and developmental initiatives. Moreover, the conference suggested developing a new strategy for Islamic dialogue that addresses youth issues and leverages modern digital and technological means to enhance their engagement with religious discourse and reinforce their Islamic identity in an evolving world.
 
The statement urged the organization of youth programs and initiatives that unite Muslims from different sects to enhance mutual understanding. It stressed the importance of connecting Muslim youth in the West with their Islamic heritage and removing the mutual stereotypes that obstruct cooperation among different schools of thought. The conference recommended developing a da’wah message inspired by ‘The Call to the People of Qiblah,’ intended for use by scholars, preachers, and Islamic schools under the theme “One Ummah and One Shared Destiny”. It also emphasized the need to establish an Islamic Dialogue Association to facilitate communication across the Ummah without exclusion.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, announced preparations, in coordination with Al-Azhar, to host the second Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference in Cairo, reaffirming the commitment to fostering Islamic unity.

Participants at the conference expressed their appreciation to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his patronage of the event. They also thanked the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar for his genuine invitation and impactful contribution, and they praised the efforts of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Bahrain and the Muslim Council of Elders for their roles in planning and organizing this important conference.

The fifth working session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” took place in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the title “Responding to the Challenges of Achieving Intra-Islamic Understanding.” Chaired by His Eminence Professor Dr. Abbas Shoman, Secretary-General of the Council of Senior Scholars at Al-Azhar, the session featured an elite panel of scholars from various Muslim countries.

During his address at the conference, His Eminence Ayatollah Dr. Sayyid Abu al-Qasim Al-Dibaji, Secretary-General of the World Organization of Pan-Islamic Jurisprudence, highlighted that the gathering represents a pivotal moment in promoting unity among the Muslim Ummah, renewing commitment to shared values, and consolidating efforts to tackle challenges.

He added, “Today we gather at this dialogue conference to discuss a critical issue concerning the fate of our Muslim Ummah: the question of Islamic unity. It is not merely a slogan to be raised at forums or just words to be repeated on occasions; it is a way of life and a fundamental pillar for achieving the renaissance and dignity of this nation, united by one faith and a lofty purpose. To strengthen unity, practical steps must be taken through fostering constructive dialogue among scholars from different schools of thought, not only through conferences and forums but also through media discourse and educational curricula that embed a culture of understanding.”

 His Eminence Professor Dr. Mustafa Baju, Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence at the University of Ghardaia and a member of the High Islamic Council of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, discussed the challenges impeding intra-Islamic understanding and ways to address them. He emphasized that challenges are an inherent part of the universal order, and conflict and competition are essential aspects of any endeavor that aims to improve humanity, particularly evident in prophetic messages, with Islam at the forefront. Addressing these challenges requires the application of informed wisdom and genuine efforts, which foster a positive environment conducive to realizing the civilizational presence of the Ummah. Achieving this is feasible through sincere steps toward establishing meaningful Islamic dialogue, which would result in the aspired understanding and the building of a wise human society within a true civilization.
 

Sheikh Dr. Abdul Latif Mahmoud Al Mahmoud, a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, presented a paper focusing on vision, concepts, and methodology, joined by council members Sheikh Dr. Farid Al-Miftah and Sheikh Dr. Ibrahim bin Rashid Al-Marikhi. Sheikh Al Mahmoud emphasized that the diversity of Islamic thought, resulting from precise jurisprudential interpretations, should be a catalyst for unity and understanding, not discord and division. He noted that differences are a universal constant and should not be seen as a cause for division, highlighting that Allah Almighty has ordained cooperation among Muslims in goodness and righteousness.  

He underscored the importance of acknowledging that differences among leading jurisprudential, doctrinal, and philosophical scholars have not eroded their mutual respect or the benefits derived from such relationships. He stressed that preventing discord due to these differences relies on understanding each perspective to maintain the faith-based Islamic fraternity as decreed by Allah Almighty.

Additionally, he pointed out that comparative studies aid students of Sharia and other disciplines in understanding diverse viewpoints, provided they rely on the original sources of those differing opinions. He also suggested that intra-Islamic dialogue should adhere to a set of principles, notably recognizing the commonalities among various schools of thought.

His Eminence Sheikh Nasser Ahmed Khalaf Al-Asfoor, a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain, discussed the challenges to achieving intra-Islamic understanding during his presentation at the conference. He was accompanied by fellow council members Dr. Suleiman Sheikh Mansoor Al-Sitri and Sheikh Mohammed Hassan Abdulmehdi Al-Sheikh. Their paper highlighted that Islam, with its grand principles and gracious teachings, encourages Muslims to coexist peacefully, practice tolerance, offer sincere counsel, and eschew division and conflict.

 The paper recommended bolstering doctrinal and ideological dialogue among scholars and thinkers from various Islamic sects and enhancing religious education curricula to instill values of tolerance, understanding, and sincere counsel. It also advocated for supporting media outlets that promote balanced awareness and for establishing platforms and institutions that unite Muslims around shared values, address differences, and raise individual and societal awareness and culture. The paper emphasized that fostering Islamic understanding is a collective responsibility that necessitates ongoing efforts at both individual and communal levels.

His Excellency Sir Iqbal Abdul Karim Sacranie, Senior Advisor at the Muslim Council of Britain, highlighted the essential need for intra-Islamic understanding within the global Islamic community. He advocated for strengthening dialogue, education, and cooperation to help Muslims overcome challenges and build a more cohesive Ummah. H.E. Sir Iqbal emphasized that collective efforts grounded in shared Islamic values could lead to greater harmony.

It is worth noting that the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference was convened in response to an invitation from His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, during the Bahrain Dialogue Forum in November 2022. The event is held under the generous patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The gathering attracted over 400 scholars, leaders, Islamic authorities, and influential figures from the Islamic world, aiming to foster Islamic unity and establish a permanent scholarly dialogue mechanism among Islamic scholars and authorities worldwide.

During the second session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” scholars and thinkers from various Islamic countries emphasized the need to enhance a culture of understanding and tolerance among Islamic schools of thought. They pointed out that religious scholars and authorities play a pivotal role in overcoming obstacles to understanding and in building bridges of communication among followers of Islamic schools of thought. This session was held with the participation of numerous distinguished religious and intellectual figures and was chaired by Dr. Abdullah Al-Sharikah, Director of the Moderation Center at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Kuwait and a member of the European Coordination Council (AMMALE).

In his speech during the session, His Eminence Sheikh Sayyed Ali Al-Amin, a member of the Muslim Council of Elders, clarified that differences in scholarly opinions have never been a cause for discord among their followers. Instead, it is the political manipulation of these differences that leads to sharp divisions. He emphasized the necessity of promoting a culture of citizenship, justice, and equality among the members of the Ummah, noting that establishing joint religious institutes between sects would help solidify the values of Islamic unity and tolerance.

His Eminence Professor Dr. Nazir Muhammad Ayyad, Grand Mufti of Egypt and Chairman of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, stated that “citizenship” is not, as some portray it, a foreign Western concept conflicting with the spirit of Islam. In reality, it is a call for acquaintance, the achievement of justice, and the building of bridges of love among various groups. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exemplified this concept in the Charter of Medina, which recognized multiple identities and allowed each community its place within a single state.

Furthermore, His Eminence Professor Dr. Ayyad offered several suggestions to address the issues and challenges faced by Muslim countries, such as the decline in community trust due to sectarian speeches and doctrinal biases. He highlighted the importance of establishing an independent global league to unify efforts to bridge institutions, enhance understanding and citizenship, and ensure their independence from sectarian agendas. Additionally, His Eminence emphasized strengthening joint humanitarian efforts among Islamic sects in areas like relief, poverty alleviation, and combating ignorance, to solidify unity and belonging.

His Eminence Sheikh Khalifa Muhammad Al-Madani Tal praised the Kingdom of Bahrain for hosting the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, highlighting the role of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, in all initiatives aimed at promoting the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, respect for diversity, and support for religious freedoms and practices.

His Eminence Sayyid Ali Abdul-Sahib Al-Hakim, Secretary-General of the Imam Al-Hakim Foundation, emphasized the importance of recognizing that jurisprudential differences are a natural reality that should not lead to conflict or violence. He stressed the necessity of understanding culturally, intellectually, and socially diverse perspectives by familiarizing oneself with the cultural, intellectual, and social aspects, and doctrinal nuances, even if only to a minimal extent of mental familiarity with other schools of thought.

His Eminence Professor Dr. Said Chabar, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Ulema in the Kingdom of Morocco and a professor at Sultan Moulay Slimane University, also emphasized the need for scholars to return to their true role in fostering understanding among sects. He advocated focusing on shared religious foundations and agreed-upon principles, rather than dwelling on divisive details.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is hosting the first edition of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference on February 19 and 20, under the generous patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, received Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, today at his residence in the Kingdom of Bahrain to explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

At the start of their meeting, the Malaysian Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the Grand Imam’s invitation to engage in this timely dialogue, appreciating his effort to involve all Islamic schools of thought without excluding any group. “I heard your opening speech at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference and requested it be translated into Malaysian to be shared with ministries, relevant agencies, mosques, and Islamic institutions in our country,” said Prime Minister Mr. Ibrahim. “Your address outlined what should be the ‘next steps’ following the conference and what actions we need to take to turn the discussions into tangible outcomes that will benefit the entire Ummah.”

Mr. Anwar Ibrahim affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to support all outcomes of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, ensuring that its message is recognized and spread globally, especially in Southeast Asia. He emphasized his country’s commitment to fostering the unity of the Ummah and rejecting divisiveness. “Your Eminence, you possess significant credibility and respect across the Muslim world, and we should use this to persuade Muslims globally of the importance of dialogue and reconciliation among all Islamic schools of thought and to close the door to those seeking to divide and scatter the Ummah from its objectives,” he stated.

In response, the Grand Imam emphasized that Islamic unity is the only solution to maintain the Ummah’s stability, resurgence, and ability to overcome any crisis, regardless of severity. This conviction motivated the convening of this conference, which addresses the scholarly aspect of understanding ‘the other’—a critical and influential factor in shaping perceptions among adherents of different schools of thought. ‘This aspect has the potential to lead the Ummah to peace, influence behaviors, and foster ideas of convergence, dialogue, and unity among all Islamic schools of thought, and to eliminate the manipulation of religion in conflicts that aim to divide communities,’ His Eminence explained. The Grand Imam highlighted the scholarly community’s ability to establish guidelines for dialogue, while noting that the responsibility for creating mechanisms for implementation rests with politicians.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar emphasized the need for coordinated efforts and opening dialogue channels between religious scholars and political leaders, stressing that Islamic fraternity and the future of the Ummah must take precedence over transient political interests. He advocated for the Muslim world to unite under a common project, asserting that unity is a fortress that no one can breach, and without which, no party can rise regardless of its strength and advancement. He pointed out that division is a disease and weakness that can only be cured through unity, dialogue, and a belief in the inevitability of a shared destiny among all members of the Ummah. He cited the Palestinian cause and the ongoing situation in Gaza, where the killing of innocents and children for over 16 months and plans for the displacement of Palestinians would not have occurred if there were true Islamic unity.

At the end of the meeting, the Grand Imam, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, presented the Malaysian Prime Minister with the Muslim Council of Elders Shield in appreciation of his efforts to serve Islam and support the causes of the Ummah.
