Participants in the second session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference emphasize the role of scholars in fostering understanding and coexistence

During the second session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” scholars and thinkers from various Islamic countries emphasized the need to enhance a culture of understanding and tolerance among Islamic schools of thought. They pointed out that religious scholars and authorities play a pivotal role in overcoming obstacles to understanding and in building bridges of communication among followers of Islamic schools of thought. This session was held with the participation of numerous distinguished religious and intellectual figures and was chaired by Dr. Abdullah Al-Sharikah, Director of the Moderation Center at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Kuwait and a member of the European Coordination Council (AMMALE).

In his speech during the session, His Eminence Sheikh Sayyed Ali Al-Amin, a member of the Muslim Council of Elders, clarified that differences in scholarly opinions have never been a cause for discord among their followers. Instead, it is the political manipulation of these differences that leads to sharp divisions. He emphasized the necessity of promoting a culture of citizenship, justice, and equality among the members of the Ummah, noting that establishing joint religious institutes between sects would help solidify the values of Islamic unity and tolerance.

His Eminence Professor Dr. Nazir Muhammad Ayyad, Grand Mufti of Egypt and Chairman of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, stated that “citizenship” is not, as some portray it, a foreign Western concept conflicting with the spirit of Islam. In reality, it is a call for acquaintance, the achievement of justice, and the building of bridges of love among various groups. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exemplified this concept in the Charter of Medina, which recognized multiple identities and allowed each community its place within a single state.

Furthermore, His Eminence Professor Dr. Ayyad offered several suggestions to address the issues and challenges faced by Muslim countries, such as the decline in community trust due to sectarian speeches and doctrinal biases. He highlighted the importance of establishing an independent global league to unify efforts to bridge institutions, enhance understanding and citizenship, and ensure their independence from sectarian agendas. Additionally, His Eminence emphasized strengthening joint humanitarian efforts among Islamic sects in areas like relief, poverty alleviation, and combating ignorance, to solidify unity and belonging.

His Eminence Sheikh Khalifa Muhammad Al-Madani Tal praised the Kingdom of Bahrain for hosting the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, highlighting the role of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, in all initiatives aimed at promoting the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, respect for diversity, and support for religious freedoms and practices.

His Eminence Sayyid Ali Abdul-Sahib Al-Hakim, Secretary-General of the Imam Al-Hakim Foundation, emphasized the importance of recognizing that jurisprudential differences are a natural reality that should not lead to conflict or violence. He stressed the necessity of understanding culturally, intellectually, and socially diverse perspectives by familiarizing oneself with the cultural, intellectual, and social aspects, and doctrinal nuances, even if only to a minimal extent of mental familiarity with other schools of thought.

His Eminence Professor Dr. Said Chabar, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Ulema in the Kingdom of Morocco and a professor at Sultan Moulay Slimane University, also emphasized the need for scholars to return to their true role in fostering understanding among sects. He advocated focusing on shared religious foundations and agreed-upon principles, rather than dwelling on divisive details.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is hosting the first edition of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference on February 19 and 20, under the generous patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The conference will be attended by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, along with a distinguished group of scholars from the Muslim Ummah. The event is organized by Al-Azhar, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Bahrain, and the Muslim Council of Elders.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, received Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, today at his residence in the Kingdom of Bahrain to explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

At the start of their meeting, the Malaysian Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the Grand Imam’s invitation to engage in this timely dialogue, appreciating his effort to involve all Islamic schools of thought without excluding any group. “I heard your opening speech at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference and requested it be translated into Malaysian to be shared with ministries, relevant agencies, mosques, and Islamic institutions in our country,” said Prime Minister Mr. Ibrahim. “Your address outlined what should be the ‘next steps’ following the conference and what actions we need to take to turn the discussions into tangible outcomes that will benefit the entire Ummah.”

Mr. Anwar Ibrahim affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to support all outcomes of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, ensuring that its message is recognized and spread globally, especially in Southeast Asia. He emphasized his country’s commitment to fostering the unity of the Ummah and rejecting divisiveness. “Your Eminence, you possess significant credibility and respect across the Muslim world, and we should use this to persuade Muslims globally of the importance of dialogue and reconciliation among all Islamic schools of thought and to close the door to those seeking to divide and scatter the Ummah from its objectives,” he stated.

In response, the Grand Imam emphasized that Islamic unity is the only solution to maintain the Ummah’s stability, resurgence, and ability to overcome any crisis, regardless of severity. This conviction motivated the convening of this conference, which addresses the scholarly aspect of understanding ‘the other’—a critical and influential factor in shaping perceptions among adherents of different schools of thought. ‘This aspect has the potential to lead the Ummah to peace, influence behaviors, and foster ideas of convergence, dialogue, and unity among all Islamic schools of thought, and to eliminate the manipulation of religion in conflicts that aim to divide communities,’ His Eminence explained. The Grand Imam highlighted the scholarly community’s ability to establish guidelines for dialogue, while noting that the responsibility for creating mechanisms for implementation rests with politicians.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar emphasized the need for coordinated efforts and opening dialogue channels between religious scholars and political leaders, stressing that Islamic fraternity and the future of the Ummah must take precedence over transient political interests. He advocated for the Muslim world to unite under a common project, asserting that unity is a fortress that no one can breach, and without which, no party can rise regardless of its strength and advancement. He pointed out that division is a disease and weakness that can only be cured through unity, dialogue, and a belief in the inevitability of a shared destiny among all members of the Ummah. He cited the Palestinian cause and the ongoing situation in Gaza, where the killing of innocents and children for over 16 months and plans for the displacement of Palestinians would not have occurred if there were true Islamic unity.

At the end of the meeting, the Grand Imam, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, presented the Malaysian Prime Minister with the Muslim Council of Elders Shield in appreciation of his efforts to serve Islam and support the causes of the Ummah.

Participants in the fourth session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “Citizenship and Enhancing Islamic Dialogue,” emphasized that the timing of this conference underscores the deep commitment of Al-Azhar, the Muslim Council of Elders, and the Kingdom of Bahrain to uniting the Muslim Ummah under the inclusive banner of Islam. They commended the efforts to foster values of citizenship and coexistence and expressed hope for a bright religious future built on the work of moderate religious institutions like Al-Azhar, renowned for its moderation, balance, and continuous advocacy for tolerance and coexistence.

At the start of the session, His Eminence Dr. Sayyed Jawad Al-Khoei, Chairman of the Al-Khoei Institute in Iraq, praised the initiative of His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, for organizing this significant conference. He highlighted that the conference demonstrates a profound dedication to uniting the Muslim Ummah and strengthening the unity of Muslims under the broad umbrella of Islam. He pointed out that in facing these challenges, the ummah relies solely on its rich and firm scholarly legacy and intellectual heritage, which empower it to confidently tackle these ideological and doctrinal struggles.
 
His Eminence Sayyed Mohammad Ali Abtahi, former Vice President under Iran’s President Mohammad Khatami and current Chairman of the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue, highlighted the efforts of religious institutions in promoting moderation and tolerance. He also stressed the vital role that moderate religious institutions like Al-Azhar Al-Sharif play in shaping a promising religious future. He highlighted that these institutions, which staunchly oppose extremism and promote moderation and tolerance, are crucial to this effort. His Eminence Sheikh Abtahi identified the diminishing influence of religious scholars and the breakdown in communication with younger generations as major factors fueling extremist interpretations. He also noted that religious institutions’ neglect of emerging issues and their lack of coordination weaken Islamic dialogue. He advocated for stronger collaboration between Al-Azhar and other Islamic institutions to foster productive dialogue.

His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, emphasized that opening channels for dialogue and establishing foundations for understanding and coexistence are fundamental necessities for interpersonal relationships.
He affirmed that Islam highly values dialogue that is founded on a willingness to understand, knowledge, and the coexistence of different cultures and that it values and respects a diversity of opinions within a framework of tolerance. He noted that Islam does not constrain reasoning or contemplation, nor does it compel Muslims to conform to a uniform way of worldly thinking; rather, it continually steers the Muslim intellect toward constructive ideas that enhance humanity with absolute intellectual freedom.
 
His Eminence Sheikh Talgat Safich Tadzetdinov, the Grand Mufti of Russia, pointed out that Russia’s experience with peaceful coexistence among religions and religious schools of thought serves as a model worthy of the attention of Muslim scholars and thinkers. He highlighted the importance of utilizing the principles of the Prophet’s “Charter of Medina” to build societies founded on justice and equality. He called for enhancing efforts in Islamic dialogue and expanding research related to it, expressing his hope that the conference would produce a “document” that acts as a contemporary activation of the “Charter of Medina” principles to promote Islamic unity and overcome differences.

Mr. Omar Bakhit Adam, Sudan’s Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, stressed the crucial role of citizenship as the foundation for achieving stability and peaceful coexistence among peoples. He suggested transforming the Muslim Council of Elders into a global center to support decision-making on shared Islamic issues. He called on the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Muslim scholars to establish a comprehensive global council focused on Muslim affairs, which would strengthen the values of citizenship, tolerance, and coexistence. He expressed his desire for the conference’s outcomes to enhance dialogue within Sudan, hoping to accomplish this with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar’s presence in Sudan, leveraging his knowledge, wisdom, and commitment to the Ummah to end suffering, conflict, and discord.
 

It is noteworthy that the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference is a response to an invitation from His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, during the Bahrain Dialogue Forum in November 2022. Held under the generous patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the conference features the participation of over 400 scholars, leaders, Islamic authorities, thinkers, and intellectuals from around the world. It aims to enhance Islamic affairs and the unity of Muslims and to establish a permanent scholarly dialogue mechanism at the level of scholars and authorities of the Muslim world.

King of Bahrain: Only in unity does the Muslim Ummah find its glory and sovereignty

 His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of the Kingdom of Bahrain, expressed pleasure that Bahrain is hosting the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, an initiative originally proposed by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, over two years ago. He remarked, “Today, we answer the Grand Imam’s historic call by convening this pivotal conference, which aims to rejuvenate Islamic thought and usher in a new era that allows us to accurately and faithfully convey the true spirit of Islam, and to intelligently address the challenges that impede the advancement of our civilization.”

During the conference’s main session at Al-Sakhir Palace, the King of Bahrain highlighted that the challenges confronting our Islamic Ummah compel us to work harder to find a unifying consensus that brings our hearts together, strengthens our unity, bolsters our determination, and shuns division and discord. He emphasized that our nation’s dignity and sovereignty can only be maintained through unity and adherence to our faith, echoing the divine command: “Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute with one another, or you would be discouraged and weakened” (The Holy Quran, 8:46).

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa also expressed his eagerness for the conference’s contributions in the scholarly and Sharia-related fields, particularly on promoting moderate thought, preventing the misuse of religion and sectarianism that threatens societal stability and national sovereignty, and creating innovative and sincere mechanisms to broaden understanding and cohesion across all elements of our Islamic communities, led by the wise guidance of religious leaders and scholars from diverse schools and intellectual traditions.

In concluding his speech, His majesty King Hamad reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to supporting any resolutions from this auspicious religious gathering that aim to unite our Islamic Ummah under the principle of authentic ‘religious fraternity.’ This commitment involves deepening solidarity and fostering closeness among Islamic sects, considering their differences as diversity and complementarity, and acknowledging that their commonalities far exceed their differences.

During the third session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” thinkers and religious scholars emphasized the pivotal role of women in advancing Islamic dialogue, fostering understanding among Islamic schools of thought, and countering the exploitation of differences that lead to division. The session, led by Professor Dr. Rashid bin Ali Al-Harithi, Dean of the College of Sharia Sciences in Oman, underscored the essential role of women in cultivating a dialogue culture, highlighting their importance as fundamental partners in community development and as crucial agents in promoting tolerance and moderation. 

Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi Al-Khuzaee, President of the University and Institute of Justice and Wisdom in the United States, spoke on the significance of promoting a dialogue and tolerance culture that bolsters women’s roles in society. Empowering women is tantamount to empowering the entire community. He noted that women’s contributions go beyond mere participation in events, citing Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, may Allah be pleased with her, as a paradigm of wisdom and faith, and a cornerstone in supporting the Islamic da’wah.

Her Eminence Professor Dr. Aisha Yousuf Omar Al-Mannai, Director of the Muhammad Bin Hamad Al Thani Centre for Muslim Contribution to Civilization at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, emphasized that Islamic dialogue can only be achieved with the participation of both men and women, who she described as the two poles of humanity. She highlighted the pivotal role of women in instilling a culture of dialogue from childhood, through “teaching love for others who are different and even more so for those who share the same faith.” This approach educates future generations on the principles of tolerance and moderation.

Professor Al-Mannai cited the Al-Azhar Declaration, which asserts, “Our societies cannot rise with one wing or breathe with one lung, and the time has come for both men and women to enjoy their rightful place as stewards of universal and social responsibility, to exercise its rights and to shoulder its burdens together.” She also discussed the role of Palestinian women in facing challenges, affirming that their resilience during crises and wars exemplifies women’s strength in preserving identity and enhancing Islamic values, adding, “We have seen mothers, wives, and sisters stand firm against the machinery of war.”
 
Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Mariam bint Hassan Al Khalifa, Vice President of the Supreme Council for Women in the Kingdom of Bahrain, addressed the role of women in shaping the discourse of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue. She emphasized that women, who constitute half of society, play a significant role in fostering a culture of understanding from an early age. She detailed how instilling values of tolerance and openness, along with enhancing dialogue skills among young generations, contributes to creating a cohesive society that respects both doctrinal and religious diversity, even in the face of differing opinions. This approach is aimed at strengthening and developing the commonalities that bind all Muslims, thereby enabling the Islamic community to actively shape its present and future.

Professor Dr. Safinaz Suliman from the University of Wisconsin–Madison discussed the challenges facing Muslims in the West and the supportive role that Islamic institutions can play. She emphasized that Muslims in Europe and the United States are an integral part of the Muslim Ummah and represent a significant civilizational force. She argued that strengthening their ties with the Muslim world is essential. Prof. Dr. Suliman highlighted that leading Islamic institutions in the East, particularly Al-Azhar, are well-positioned to support Muslims in the West. She suggested that this could be achieved through cultural exchange programs, academic dialogues, support for imams and preachers, and collaborative academic and technological initiatives to convey an accurate image of Islam.

Her Excellency Professor Dr. Nahla Al-Saeidi, Advisor to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar for International Students’ Affairs, shed light on the significant role of women in fostering a culture of dialogue, highlighting Islam’s recognition of women as key societal builders. She showcased historical figures such as Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, emphasizing her contributions to religious dialogue. Prof. Dr. Al-Saeidi advocated for greater female involvement in bridging Islamic sects, leveraging their natural communication and understanding skills.  

Participants concurred that dialogue is essential for achieving social peace and promoting a culture of coexistence among Islamic schools of thought. They stressed the need to instill these values and underscored the importance of including women in these efforts, recognizing their pivotal role in nurturing generations committed to tolerance and understanding.

The participants in the inaugural session of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, held under the theme “One Nation, One Shared Destiny” and the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stressed the importance of fostering Islamic unity and mutual understanding among different sects. They argued that this is essential to confront the challenges facing the Ummah. The speakers urged for a resolution of historical disagreements and emphasized the importance of building a foundation for peaceful coexistence, drawing on successful efforts to bridge differences between sects.

In his address, His Eminence Professor Dr. Hassan Al-Shafi’i, a member of the Al-Azhar Council of Senior Scholars and the Muslim Council of Elders, pointed out significant barriers to Islamic unity, such as insufficient mutual knowledge among followers of various Islamic schools of thought and the proliferation of misleading rumors that perpetuate negative stereotypes. He noted that overcoming these challenges requires increasing awareness, enhancing dialogue, and underscoring shared elements like the unity of the holy book, the Qibla, and the fundamental pillars of the religion.

In a related context, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Hamid Shahriari, Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, stressed the necessity for collaboration among Muslim countries through an institutional framework that unites them under a single entity, named “the Federation of Muslim Countries.” He underscored that such cooperation and unified efforts are crucial for achieving security and stability, and addressing the challenges facing the Muslim world.

Additionally, Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, the Spiritual Leader of Muslims in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus Region and a member of the Muslim Council of Elders, discussed Azerbaijan’s role as a model for Islamic coexistence. In Azerbaijan, Muslims from different sects live harmoniously and practice their religious duties following a unified calendar, without discrimination between Sunni and Shia. He emphasized that this unity and mutual understanding among the schools of thought exemplify their lifestyle, reflect their state policies, and form part of their cultural heritage.

In his address during the session, His Excellency Professor Dr. Osama Al-Sayed Al-Azhari, Minister of Religious Endowments in the Arab Republic of Egypt, highlighted that diversity in religious sects and thought is a natural aspect of life and the universe. He stressed that jurisprudential disagreements should not lead to conflicts or divisions among members of the Ummah.

Continuing on this theme, Islamic scholar Dr. Bashar Awad Ma’ruf emphasized the importance of grounding Islamic dialogue in a clear methodological vision that prioritizes commonalities between sects and avoids igniting doctrinal disputes in public settings.

Concluding the session, the participants declared that achieving Islamic unity is indeed feasible, requiring collaborative efforts across intellectual, political, and social dimensions. They noted the media’s role should be to foster unity rather than provoke discord, highlighting that the Muslim world abounds with successful cases of peaceful coexistence. These examples can serve as a foundation for a practical model of unity and combat the extremist ideologies spread by proponents of various intellectual schools.

Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan: We appreciate the role of Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders in promoting fraternity and coexistence in our country

His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, has met His Excellency Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Head of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, at his residence in Manama, the capital of Bahrain. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, in which both leaders are participating.  

The Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan praised the Grand Imam’s speech at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, describing it as an accurate reflection of the state of the Islamic world. He noted that the speech succinctly addressed key challenges facing the Muslim world while proposing effective solutions to counter division and fragmentation, which have weakened the Islamic nation. He emphasized the importance of the conference, recognizing the Grand Imam as a true religious leader of global influence. He also expressed deep appreciation for Al-Azhar’s continued support for Muslim communities worldwide, particularly in Kazakhstan.  

The Chairman of the Senate extended his gratitude to the Grand Imam for the ongoing support provided by Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders to Muslims in Kazakhstan, as well as for their contribution to the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which Kazakhstan hosts annually. He highlighted that the Regional Office of the Muslim Council of Elders in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, has been actively engaged in initiatives promoting coexistence, fostering human fraternity, and empowering youth and women in the country.  

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Senate delivered an official invitation from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to the Grand Imam, inviting him to visit Kazakhstan and inaugurate the upcoming edition of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, scheduled to take place in September. He stated, “I was keen to travel to Bahrain specifically to meet Your Eminence and personally deliver this invitation from the President of Kazakhstan. Your Eminence represents a voice of justice that extends beyond Muslims, advocating a moderate faith that upholds human dignity and values diversity and coexistence.”  

For his part, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar expressed his appreciation for the president of Kazakhstan’s invitation and affirmed his willingness to accept it. He emphasized that Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders are committed to supporting this important congress, as it serves as a global platform that amplifies the voice of religion and strengthens its role in addressing common humanitarian challenges.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized that history has proven that the Islamic Ummah has gained nothing from division, fragmentation, or interference in each other’s internal affairs. He warned that territorial disputes, the exploitation of sectarian and ethnic differences, and attempts to alter established religious traditions through coercion or enticement have only fueled conflict, weakened the Ummah, and emboldened external forces against it. The Grand Imam condemned calls to forcibly displace an entire people from their homeland to make way for a tourist resort—built upon the remains of martyrs, men, women, and children—from among our brothers and sisters in Gaza. He stressed that the time has come for genuine Arab-Islamic solidarity, free from the divisive forces that have held the Ummah back for so long. Only through true unity, he affirmed, can the Islamic world secure its future and safeguard its lands.

During his speech at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, held at Al-Sakhir Palace in the presence of His Majesty the King of Bahrain, His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, offered a heartfelt prayer, asking Allah to guide and unite Arab leaders at their upcoming summits in the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Grand Imam also extended his gratitude to Islamic scholars, Islamic jurists, and intellectuals for their gracious response to the invitation of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Muslim Council of Elders, to engage in consultations on the pressing challenges imposed by a painful reality that continues to weigh heavily on all Muslims. Expressing his appreciation for this exceptional gathering, His Eminence noted that such a remarkable scene has rarely been witnessed—one where scholars and representatives from across the Islamic spectrum, including Sunni, Shiite, Zaydi, and Ibadi scholars, as well as Muslims of all backgrounds, have come together in unity. He cited the words of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who defined a Muslim in the hadith:
“Whoever prays as we do, faces our Qiblah, and eats our slaughtered animals is a Muslim under Allah’s and His Messenger’s protection. So do not betray Allah by betraying those in His protection.”
  
In his commitment to continuing the journey and renewing intentions in service of Islam, His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, announced that the next edition of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference will be hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif. He prayed to Allah Almighty to guide efforts toward the well-being of the Ummah and to enable it to achieve unity, solidarity, progress, and prosperity.

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Proposes a “Constitution of the People of the Qiblah” to Scholars Gathered at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference in Bahrain

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, highlighted that ‘rapprochement’ between Sunnis and Shias has long captivated the scholars of the Muslim Ummah. They have diligently worked to sustain this objective within the consciousness of Muslim communities, ingraining it deeply and invoking it in their emotions whenever the seeds of division and discord threatened to emerge, disrupting their unity and undermining their stability and security. Despite considerable efforts, the issue of ‘rapprochement’ remains an open question, as if no scholar had ever written about it before. The likely reason for this is that most studies addressing rapprochement have approached it from a purely theoretical and polemical perspective, without making the transition from abstract discourse to practical implementation, integrating it into the realities of Muslim communities.

Speaking at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, His Eminence also noted that Dar ِِAl-Taqrib in Cairo—under the supervision of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, represented by its scholars, including Al-Azhar professors, and scholars from the Twelver Shiite religious authorities—published the journal “Risalat Al-Islam” in nine volumes, spanning over 4,000 pages. This publication covered a period of eight years, from 1949 to 1957. Beyond this, dozens of studies, books, and university dissertations have been published and widely distributed by publishing houses in Egypt, Iraq, Iran, and Lebanon, as well as by Western European universities, in various languages and academic disciplines.

The Grand Imam emphasized the importance of acknowledging that we are living through a genuine crisis, one that Muslims everywhere are paying a high price for, regardless of where they are. There is no way to confront the contemporary challenges and successive crises except through the unity of Muslim nations, opening channels of communication among all components of the Muslim Ummah, without excluding any group or faction, while upholding respect for national sovereignty, borders, and independence. 

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders expressed his confidence that this blessed conference would produce a serious and actionable plan to establish unity, mutual understanding, and cooperation among all Islamic schools of thought. It should also strive to ensure a perpetual dialogue, in which all causes of division, strife, and sectarian or ethnic conflict are eliminated while focusing on points of agreement and commonality. Furthermore, its resolutions must affirm the golden principle: “We cooperate on matters we agree upon, and we excuse one another in matters where we differ.” Additionally, there must be a firm commitment to ending hateful rhetoric, abandoning the practices of excommunication (takfir), condemning others for innovating new practices in religion (tabdi’), and declaring others sinful (tafsiq), and moving beyond both historical and contemporary conflicts with all their complications and harmful remnants. He further noted that this conference should bring together all participants with pure hearts and outstretched hands, genuinely committed to turning a new page and strengthening the Islamic cause. Muslims must remain vigilant against agents of discord, avoiding the trap of destabilizing nations and exploiting sectarianism as a means of interfering in the internal affairs of states. Above all, Muslims must reject any attempt to sow division among citizens of a single country, destabilizing its security, political stability, and social cohesion. These are heinous crimes that Islam categorically forbids, that human ethics abhor, and that international norms denounce unequivocally.
 
His Eminence the Grand Imam urged that we draw from the experiences of our contemporaries to galvanize our resolve in establishing a cooperative Islamic ‘union’ that defends the rights of this Ummah and shields its people from injustice, arrogance, and tyranny. “Consider Europe, with its twenty-seven nations; despite their diverse ethnicities, languages exceeding twenty-four, and varied religious and sectarian beliefs, they have achieved a union that safeguards their citizens, enhances peace and stability, preserves their identity from erosion, fosters economic growth, and upholds democratic values. If non-Muslim nations, despite numerous obstacles, can attain a “union” that fortifies them in political, economic, and cultural arenas, should Muslims today be unable to realize a ‘union’ essential for their survival amidst fierce storms and destructive tempests? A union founded on shared elements unparalleled among other nations: geography, history, ethnicity, language, religion, heritage, culture, and a common destiny.”

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif highlighted the Palestinian cause as a critical example of the need for unity within the Ummah. He emphasized the conspiracy targeting its people and the entire Ummah, including efforts to displace the Palestinians of Gaza from their homes and seize their lands. His Eminence noted that by the grace of Allah, both the Arab and Islamic communities—encompassing both populations and leaders—have adopted a unified and dignified stance. This stance resolutely opposes the manifest injustice and aggression against the inhabitants of a blessed land and the sovereignty of neighboring Muslim states, revitalizing hope for unity across the Islamic community.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar presented a proposal to the scholars gathered at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference in Bahrain, saying: “I propose what I consider a necessity rather than a mere enhancement: that the eminent scholars of the Ummah, representing various schools of thought and gathered at this conference, collaborate to draft a ‘Charter of the People of the Qiblah’ or ‘Religious Fraternity’. This charter would be introduced by the authentic hadith: ‘Whoever prays as we do, faces our Qiblah, and eats our slaughtered animals is a Muslim under Allah’s and His Messenger’s protection. So do not betray Allah by betraying those in His protection.’ The distinguished Imam Sheikh Abu Zahra—God rest his soul—previously suggested this initiative, outlining its foundational principles. It would be commendable if you would study and build upon his proposal.” 

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, expressed his gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, for his generous patronage of this grand and significant conference, held during a critical juncture where the Islamic Ummah stands at a crossroads, facing a relentless and merciless storm that threatens to obliterate fifteen centuries of civilization, uprooting it from its very foundations.  He further expressed his appreciation to His Majesty and his esteemed aides for their unwavering commitment to the affairs of our Arab and Muslim Ummah and for their keen awareness of the urgency to act while there is still time to safeguard this Ummah from the perils that threaten it—dangers meticulously orchestrated to bring about its downfall, devastation, and demise. These are perils whose early signs we have already witnessed and whose flames we have already felt, yet we remain uncertain about the full extent of what is yet to come.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, arrived in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, today, Tuesday, to participate in the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, themed “One Nation, One Shared Destiny,” which takes place on the 19th and 20th of February.

Upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport, His Eminence was greeted with an official reception. He was welcomed by His Excellency Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Khalifa, President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs; His Excellency Mr. Nawaf bin Mohammed Al Ma’awda, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs, and Endowments; His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders; Ambassador Reham Abdel Hameed, the Egyptian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain; and His Excellency Mr. Salman bin Isa bin Hindi Al Mannai, Governor of the Muharraq Governorate.

The conference is graciously hosted under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, and is organized by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Bahrain, and the Muslim Council of Elders. It boasts participation from over 400 esteemed scholars, leaders, Islamic authorities, thinkers, and intellectuals from around the globe. This event is held in response to the call made by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif at the Bahrain Dialogue Forum: East and West for Human Coexistence in November 2022, which aimed to foster Islamic unity and advance Muslim affairs.
