The Muslim Council of Elders’ Indonesian branch organized a seminar titled ‘Religion and Climate Issues’ as part of the council’s participation in the 2023 Islamic Book Fair in Indonesia. The event drew notable attendance, especially from the youth, who gathered at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta.

The seminar focused on the discussion and review of the book ‘The Last Generation: Islamic World Activity to Prevent Climate Change and Environmental Extinction’. Dr. Muhammad Zainul Majdi, member of the Executive Office of the Muslim Council of Elders, and Dr. Fakhrudin Mohammad Mangunjaya, the Head of the Islamic Studies Center at the National University of Jakarta, took part in the discussion.

In his address, Dr. Muhammad Zainul Majdi praised the enthusiasm of the young university students in the seminar which focused on the environment and climate change. He emphasized that the youth are the most influential actors in caring for the future of Indonesia and the world in order to ensure greater prosperity. He reminded them of the Prophet Muhammed’s (PBUH) hadith: “Start with yourself, then those you provide for,” signifying the necessity for each individual to begin by personally caring for the environment, such as conserving daily water consumption, avoiding excessive use of plastic materials, and showing more concern for environmental sustainability.

Following the seminar’s conclusion, Dr. Muhammad Zainul Majdi and Dr. Fakhrudin visited the Council’s stand in the Mecca hall. They commended the Council’s participation and the publications of Dar Al-Hikma Publishing, which aim to rectify misconceptions, spread the true teachings of religion, raise awareness among the youth about contemporary issues, and emphasize the role of religions in facing global challenges, particularly climate change.
